respect DND

when Do Not Disturb is on, don't interrupt

Pinging someone in DND mode is like knocking on their door while they're wearing headphones... ⛔

What this means 🤔

Do Not Disturb exists so people can focus without being interrupted by notifications. You are still welcome to send a message — just don't try to get attention with with multiple messages.

❌ Don't do this

Bad Example

hey @dev you there? ? bro? quick question

These messages trigger notifications without providing any information. You're breaking someone's focus multiple times.

The person had DND enabled to focus on their work. Your pings broke their concentration multiple times before they could even find out what you needed.

The question could have been answered immediately if it was included in the first message. Instead, they lost focus and you had to wait.

Other variations that waste time:

  • "ping"
  • "quick question"
  • "got a sec?"
  • "u around?"
  • "hey @username"

Just ask the question! 😫

✓ Do this instead

Good Example

Hey! When you're free, can you send me the project files? Did you finish reviewing the document I sent? Can you help me with this issue? The app crashes when I click submit

Leave the full message. They'll read it when available and can respond immediately without waiting for context.

This approach includes everything in one message. The recipient can read it between tasks, answer quickly, and go back to focused work. Total interruption: minimal.

You can still be polite! Add pleasantries, context, or friendly language - just include your actual question too.

Good examples:

  • "Hey! Hope you're doing well. What's the deployment schedule for this week?"
  • "Morning! When you get a chance, could you review that product?"
  • "Quick question when you're free - which library should I use for the date picker?"
  • "if you're around, can you check why the build is failing?"

It may seem trivial, but asking your question before getting that initial reply also allows for asynchronous communication. If they're away and you leave before they come back, they can still answer your question instead of just staring at a "ping".

When done right - everyone's happy! 🎉
